How to Get to Lokrum Island, Croatia

From Cavtat

Cavtat harbour in Croatia

We were basing ourselves in Cavtat and found it really easy to visit Lokrum on a day trip. There’s a pier in Cavtat, and you can catch a small boat to the island using a local tour company.

The journey takes between 45-60 minutes, but the water can be quite choppy. Sometimes, the boats will also pick up people from Dubrovnik first, which will add an extra 15 minutes to your journey.

There’s also the ferry which is run by Adriana Cavtat. No matter which option you go for, just make sure you ask for the return journey times. You don’t want to get stranded!

From Dubrovnik

The most popular way to get to the island is to take the ferry from Dubrovnik to Lokrum. The journey takes between 10-15 minutes and sailings are regular.

These typically leave from Dubrovnik Old Town and you can admire the stunning views along the way. Ferry tickets are affordable and offer an easy way to visit the island. Just make sure you check the ferry times in advance.

Kayaking tours are another popular option when it comes to visiting Lokrum Island. These typically leave from Pile Bay in Dubrovnik, and you’ll kayak around the island. Unfortunately, you can’t actually visit the island on these tours, so you’re best off catching a ferry or boat.

Where to Buy Lokrum Island Ferry Tickets

Ferry to Lokrum Island

When it comes to buying ferry tickets, you’ve got a couple of options. You can either purchase them online in advance or get them from the ticket kiosks in the Old Town Port.

Some sources suggest that you can purchase tickets on the ferry, but we didn’t come across this. As such, we’d recommend getting them from the ticket kiosk to be sure!

Adult ferry tickets cost €27 (around £23.50) while children’s tickets (those aged 5-18) cost €5 (around £4). Children under 5 can travel for free and all of these tickets include a round-trip journey.

The Best Things to Do When Visiting Lokrum Island

1. Visit the Benedictine Monastery

Visiting Lokrum - Benedictine Monastery

When visiting Lokrum Island, make sure you head to the Benedictine Monastery. This complex contains several ruins, some of which date back to the 12th/13th century.

The monastery here is thought to date back to the 15th century. In fact, the first mention of Lokrum in the history books is of this place, making it a must-visit for your trip. Not to mention, the architecture is pretty impressive!

The island of Lokrum is thought to be ‘cursed’ with this curse being associated with the founding of the monastery. It’s believed that a French army general ordered the monastery to be closed, and in turn, the Benedictine monks to be expelled.

The monks were so frustrated that they supposedly laid a curse on the island. After that, the curse was believed to have taken effect, as three aristocrats died shortly after. However, we never had any problems haha!

2. Wander around Fort Royal

Fort Royal, Lokrum Island

If you’re wondering what to do on Lokrum Island then we’d recommend heading to Fort Royal. It sits upon the island’s highest point and was once inhabited by the French army after they occupied Dubrovnik back in 1806. It was then completed in 1835 by the Austrian administration.

Walking up to Fort Royal is one of the best things to do on Lokrum Island. From the top, you’ll get incredible views of the Adriatic Sea and Dubrovnik. As such, we’d highly recommend timing your visit to the island on a clear day.

You’ll need to walk along the Path of Paradise to reach Fort Royal. This is one of three central paths throughout the island, and trees line the whole route.

Although beautiful (and peaceful), the walk up to Fort Royal is steep. On a warm day, it can feel pretty tiring and there’s not much shade, so bring a water bottle with you.

3. Explore the Botanical Gardens

Lokrum Botanical Gardens

Lokrum Island was once used as a holiday home by Archduke Maximillian Ferdinand of Habsburg, Austria.

During the 19th century, he planted a wide variety of flora, ranging from palm trees to cacti, along with many more plant species. There’s a variety of exotic species in these gardens, some of which originate from Australia and South America.

In 1959, the area became a botanical garden so that research could take place into how the exotic plants adapted to the island’s climate. Today, there are around 800 species here to observe. In our opinion, that’s pretty impressive considering a lot of the flora was damaged during Croatia’s war.

Not only are the Botanical Gardens beautiful, but there’s plenty of wildlife here. This includes cute rabbits and the island’s famous peacocks (which you’ll likely see in other areas too).

4. Float in the ‘Dead Sea’

Lokrum Island, Dead Sea

When visiting Lokrum Island, you have to visit the ‘Dead Sea’. That’s right, Lokrum has its very own version of this famous destination, although it’s a lot smaller and is called Mrtvo More.

Due to erosion over millions of years, cracks have formed in the rock surface. Over time, these faults and fractures have filled with seawater, leading to a small salt-filled lake. This lake is linked to the Adriatic Sea and is 10 metres (33 feet) deep in some areas!

Not only are the waters crystal clear but as the name suggests, you can essentially ‘float’ in the water. It’s the perfect place to cool off on a warm summer’s day, so don’t forget your swimming gear when you head to Lokrum.

Although this spot is one of our favourites on the island, just be aware that it gets busy. It’s one of Lokrum’s most popular spots, so try to get here as early as possible!

5. Take a swim

Swimming in the Dead Sea in Lokrum

Mrtvo More (which we just mentioned) is a fantastic place to go for a swim, especially if you’re after a more unique experience. However, it does get busy. Luckily, there are plenty of other fantastic swimming spots on the island.

If you head to the eastern side of Lokrum there are plenty of places where you can jump in. There are also ladders to help you get back onto the island, so you’ll have no issues when it comes to getting in and out.

Another great swimming spot is Lokrum Beach, which is certainly worth a visit. Cliff diving is also a popular activity, but make sure you exercise caution (of course).

If you’re up for it, Lokrum is even home to a nudist beach. That isn’t really up our street, but it goes to show that this island has a swimming spot for everyone!

6. Visit Game of Thrones Filming Locations

If you’re a Game of Thrones fan like us, then check out some of the show’s filming locations on the island. They’re a must-visit for any TV buff so what are you waiting for?

First of all, the Benedictine Monastery was used for some of the garden scenes in Quarth. As such, you’ll be walking in the steps of Daenerys Targaryen, the Mother of Dragons.

You’ll also find the official Iron Throne on Lokrum, and you’ll get some impressive views of ‘Kings Landing’ from this island too. What’s not to like?

This Lokrum Island Game of Thrones tour departs from Dubrovnik and lasts for around 3 hours. You’ll have a licensed tour guide with you at all times, who will show you the highlights. You’ll also have your picture taken on the official ‘Iron Throne’. Just keep in mind that your ferry tickets aren’t included.

7. Visit some of the island’s viewpoints and rock formations

Although Lokrum is only small, there are plenty of things to do. A highlight has to be exploring the island’s incredible rock formations, of which there are many!

The most famous has to be Lokrum’s Rock Arch which is a really cool spot. You can even walk above the arch if you want your travel buddy to snap a cool photograph. Just be mindful when exploring these rock formations, as they can get slippery (especially after lots of rainfall).

While visiting Lokrum Island, we’d recommend enjoying some of the island’s viewpoints as well. Fort Royal offers some of the best views, as you’ll get fantastic vistas of Dubrovnik.

However, there seems to be an epic view from every corner, so take your time to explore. Better yet, if you stay away from the more popular locations, you might get a viewpoint all to yourself!

8. Eat at one of Lokrum’s restaurants

We’d recommend packing a picnic for your trip to Lokrum. Unfortunately, food prices at the restaurants here can be costly. Not to mention, they can get very busy, especially during the peak summer months.

However, if you’re not on a tight budget, then there are some great options. Below are some of the top picks:

  • Lacroma Restaurant – Although shut for the winter, this restaurant is a great option. There are plenty of tasty seafood dishes to choose from, and some delicious desserts including the ‘Lokrum Mystery’.
  • Rajski Vrt – Eden Garden Restaurant – Some of the dishes are relatively expensive, but this place offers a relaxed atmosphere, a shaded dining area underneath the trees, and great service.
  • Lacroma Snack Bar – The staff are very friendly at this restaurant and it’s the perfect option if you’re after a quick bite. Boasting a relaxing atmosphere and fast service, it’s got a lot to offer.
