The Ultimate 4-Week Sri Lanka Itinerary

You could spend months travelling around Sri Lanka and still not see everything this country has to offer. Sometimes, it can be overwhelming to plan a trip here. Not to worry, we’ve done the leg work for you!

We’ll be starting in the city of Colombo, as Bandaranaike International Airport is just a 30-minute drive away. The airport is actually located in Negombo, but you’ll want to prioritise Colombo instead.

So let’s dive into the ultimate Sri Lanka itinerary!

Days 1-2: Colombo

Colombo Beach in Sri Lanka

Colombo is the first stop on this Sri Lanka itinerary! It’s the country’s capital but was also the capital of British Ceylon from the year 1815. That is until Sri Lanka gained its independence in 1948.

Once only a simple trading port, now it’s the most populated city in Sri Lanka. Due to its colonisation by the British, you’ll find a variety of colonial buildings here too.

Colombo is a place that will overwhelm your senses as it’s such a vibrant city. There’s also plenty of delicious cuisine to be found here.

Compared to the rest of the country, it’s not a place where you’ll want to spend all your time. However, there are a few sights to see, so allow at least a day or two in the city!

Things to do in Colombo

One of the best places to visit in Colombo is Galle Face Green. It’s an oceanfront urban park that’s popular with both locals and tourists.

While here, you can watch the sunset, try some delicious local food, and walk along the promenade. No matter when you visit, Galle Face Green is bound to be crowded. However, that’s all part of the experience!

Here are some other things to do in Colombo:

  • Visit the National Museum
  • Go on a tuk-tuk tour of the city
  • Relax on Colombo Beach
  • Head out on a food tour – This rustic food tour will take you to some of the best local spots and you’ll get to try a variety of different dishes and snacks.
  • Visit Viharamahadevi Park

As the largest city in Sri Lanka, you’ll need to make use of public transport to get around. There are a variety of bus services, and these are an extremely cheap way to travel around the city.

Taxi services are another popular option, and luckily, Uber works here. Getting around this way is extremely convenient, and is the best choice if you’re looking to make the most of your time.

If you’re looking to take day trips out of Colombo, then you can either catch the train or take a bus. You’ll also find plenty of fantastic tours if you’d prefer the logistics to already be organised.

Days 3-4: Hikkaduwa

Sea turtle in Hikkaduwa

Next up on your Sri Lanka itinerary is the coastal town of Hikkaduwa. This cosy town is just a 2-hour drive from Colombo, although it will take much longer if you’re catching public transport.

Here, you’ll find a 1 km (0.6 mile) strip that’s full of shops, restaurants, and guesthouses. Although small, you won’t be short of places to stay in Hikkaduwa. There’s also plenty of experiences to be had, so allow at least two days here.

Thanks to its location along Hikkaduwa Beach, this area is extremely scenic. However, it’s a popular beach getaway, so be mindful that it can get extremely busy.

Although not the perfect option for a peaceful retreat, you don’t want to miss out on visiting Hikkaduwa!

Things to do in Hikkaduwa

Hikkaduwa is known for its sea turtles, so snorkelling in this area is one of the most popular things to do. The turtles live here all year round, as they feed on the seaweed which you’ll find on the seafloor.

If you’re looking to explore a bit further out, then you can hire a bicycle to get you around. You’ll also find plenty of tuk tuks in and around Hikkaduwa, although you’ll need to haggle a price.

Hikkaduwa has a bus station too, so you can easily take day trips along the coast. Prices are cheap, although the buses can feel very crowded.

The rooms at Araliya Beach Resort & Spa Unawatuna are absolutely beautiful, and many of them offer stunning sea views. For the ultimate experience, check out the Presidential Suite!

How to get around Unawatuna

Beach in Asia

Like Hikkaduwa, Unawatuna is a relatively small coastal town. However, it’s important to base yourself in the right area. We didn’t know this at the time and ended up choosing somewhere that was a 20-25 minute walk from the main beach.

For the best experience, opt for somewhere near Unawatuna Beach. This way, you’ll be just a short walk from the town’s restaurants, beach clubs, and shops.

There are bus stops along the main road if you’re looking to explore further out. The main road is just a 10-minute walk from Unawatuna Beach which is where you’ll need to catch the bus.

Here are some other things to do in Mirissa:

Pod of pilot whales in Mirissa

Mirissa is another relatively small coastal town so you can easily get around on foot. However, some of the accommodation options are located a bit more out of town so make sure you keep that in mind.

If that’s the case, then there are plenty of tuk-tuks in the area that you can use to get around. Your other option is to hire a scooter, although you won’t need to if you’re just planning to stay in Mirissa.

However, if you plan to explore the surrounding coastline then having a scooter allows you to create your own itinerary. Your other option is to hop on the public buses that run through the town.

Days 12-14: Tangalle

Tangalle Beach, Sri Lanka itinerary

Tangalle is another great place to include on your Sri Lanka travel itinerary, especially as it’s much quieter than some of the other coastal towns. If you’re looking for a peaceful getaway, then this is your place!

Although the town is geared up for tourism, this destination has never quite taken off in the same way. However, that only adds to its charm, as it offers more of an authentic experience.

Known for its white sand beaches and turquoise waters, the beauty of Tangalle is breathtaking. Not to mention, there are plenty of things to do in the area to keep you busy!

To make the most of this place, we’d recommend spending at least two days here. This will give you enough time to relax and take advantage of the activities on offer.

Things to do in Tangalle

Luxury: Anantara Peace Haven Tangalle Resort

Anantara Peace Haven Tangalle Resort is a 5* hotel that’s located just outside of Tangalle. It’s set right on the beachfront and offers panoramic sea views! The rooms are stunning too.

The highlight of staying here has to be the variety of facilities on offer. This includes six dining options, two outdoor pools, a spa and wellness centre, and a private beach area.

How to get around Tangalle

Crocodile in Udawalawe National Park

The key thing to note about Tangalle is that the town centre is around a 20-minute walk from the beach area. We stayed just off Vijaya Road, and this was the perfect location thanks to the surrounding amenities.

The beach was just a short walk away, and you’ll find a variety of shops and restaurants in this area. In all honesty, you don’t really need to go to the town itself. However, if you do there are tuk-tuks available.

Like many of the other coastal towns in Sri Lanka, public buses run through Tangalle. If you want to explore the surrounding areas, then you can hop on one of these!

After spending so much time along the beautiful coastline, it’s time to head away from the sea. Nuwara Eliya is a 4.5-hour drive inland and is located within Sri Lanka’s tea country.

Nuwara Eliya gives off a completely different vibe than other destinations in the country so it’s not somewhere that you want to leave off your Sri Lanka itinerary.

Also known as ‘Little England’ thanks to its colonial buildings and cool climate, the scenery around Nuwara Eliya will also take your breath away – especially the tea plantations!

For the best experience, allow around 3 days here as there’s a lot to see. However, you probably won’t need much more time than that, unless you’re planning to take lots of day trips.

This area is most famous for being home to the historical monument of Sigiriya Rock. However, there are a few other notable attractions nearby, so it’s certainly worth spending a day or two here.

The majority of accommodation options in this area are situated relatively close to Sigiriya Lion Rock. The same goes for the restaurants, so all the amenities are easily accessible.

Just make sure you’re cautious at night. During our time in Sigiriya, we were told to not leave the hotel at night as a herd of elephants live in the area, and they can become extremely territorial.

You won’t need a ton of time here, but just make sure this place is included on your Sri Lanka itinerary!

Things to do in Sigiriya

The main thing to do here is to visit Sigiriya Rock itself. This ancient rock fortress is the most popular attraction in Sri Lanka and it’s not hard to see why!

The fortress dates back to around 477-495 AD so it’s got quite the history. King Kasyapa chose this site as the country’s new capital, and he built an impressive palace on top of a huge rock column. You can still see these ruins to this day.

Your other option is to get around by tuk-tuk driver, or you can opt for one of the fantastic guided tours that are available in this area.

Days 24-26: Trincomalee

Trincomalee, Sri Lanka

After spending just over a week inland, it’s time to head back to the sea! This time, you’ll be heading to the East Coast of Sri Lanka, which is where you’ll find Trincomalee.

This is another popular beach destination, but it’s often much quieter than those on the South Coast. However, it’s a great place to visit if you’re looking to spend some time in the water, as there are ample snorkelling and scuba diving opportunities.

Trincomalee offers a laid-back atmosphere, yet, there are still plenty of amenities for you to enjoy. Just keep in mind that the main city is located around a 30-minute walk from the beach area.

We’d recommend staying along the beach, and then just heading into the city from there. This way, you’ll have the best of both worlds.

Things to do in Trincomalee

Trincomalee Beach

The main thing you’ll want to do in Trincomalee is head out on a snorkelling trip. This is one of the best activities we did in Sri Lanka, and we can highly recommend it to anyone who’s looking to explore under the waves.

How to get around Trincomalee

Trincomalee Beach viewpoint

As we previously mentioned, the main city of Trincomalee and the beach area is a 20-30 minute walk away from each other. That of course depends on which beach area you’re staying at!

Although walkable, there are tuk-tuks available if you’d prefer to get around quickly. As for the attractions located within Trincomalee itself, many of them are situated relatively close together.

Thanks to its location, you can always take guided tours out of the city to destinations such as Kadulla National Park, Sigiriya, and Anuradhapura. Your other option is to hire a scooter or tuk-tuk and drive yourself around.

Day 27-28: Negombo

Negombo, Sri Lanka itinerary

The last stop on this Sri Lanka itinerary is the city of Negombo. It’s situated along the West Coast and is where you’ll find the country’s main international airport.

Although not one of the more popular destinations in Sri Lanka, Negombo does have a lot to offer. Aside from its vibrant culture, you’ll find a lot of great things to do in this city!

However, if you’ve just spent a full month exploring the country, then you can always take these days just to relax. We’re sure you’ll be tired if you’ve followed this action-packed itinerary.

Many people opt to just spend one day in Negombo to fly back out of the country (we’re guilty of this). However, there are plenty of places to visit so try not to rush your time here.

Things to do in Negombo

Negombo Beach

One of the best things to do in this city is to take a tour of Negombo Lagoon. This place is a haven for wildlife, and you can take a guided boat tour out to explore.

How to get around Negombo

Dutch Canal, Negombo

Negombo is one of the major cities in Sri Lanka and you’ll find that the attractions are spread out. As such, you can either hire a scooter or other vehicle to get around yourself or hire a tuk-tuk driver.

There are local buses that run throughout Negombo, but it’s often much quicker to just take a taxi. Pickme is a popular ride-hailing app so you may want to download it before you get to Sri Lanka. There’s also Uber.

Some of the attractions are located outside of the city, and there are plenty of day trip opportunities. For these, your best option is to book a tour if you don’t have your own transport.

Only have 2 weeks in Sri Lanka?

Coconut Tree Hill, Mirissa, Sri Lanka

If you only have 2 weeks in the country then you’ll need to condense your Sri Lanka itinerary.

There are some destinations that you’ll want to prioritise over others, but we can help with that! Here’s an idea of how you can spend your days in the country.

Sri Lanka 2-week itinerary

Hikkaduwa: Day 1-2

Unawatuna: Day 3-4

Mirissa: Day 5-8

Ella: Day 9-11

Sigiriya: Day 12-14

However, for the best experience, we’d recommend spending at least 3-4 weeks in Sri Lanka. That will give you enough time to visit plenty of the incredible places that this country has to offer.

Trust us, you don’t want to rush your visit!

Where else should you visit in Sri Lanka?

Kandy Lake, Asia

If you’re planning to stay in the country a bit longer, there are plenty of other destinations that you can add to your Sri Lanka travel itinerary.

Let’s take a look at some of the other options!

Kandy

Kandy in Sri Lanka

Ideally, if you’re putting together an itinerary for Sri Lanka you’ll want to visit Kandy. Unfortunately, we just didn’t have the time!

Kandy is one of the most popular cities in the country and is home to a variety of fantastic attractions. The most popular is Sri Dalada Maligawa (otherwise known as The Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic), as it houses the relic tooth of the Lord Buddha.

Other popular places to visit in Kandy include the Royal Botanical Gardens, Udawatta Kele Sanctuary, and Kandy Lake. Try to spend at least one full day in this city, or preferably two if possible.

Anuradhapura

Anuradhapura, UNESCO World Heritage Site

Anuradhapura is another of Sri Lanka’s UNESCO World Heritage Sites. It was the country’s first capital city and dates back to the 4th century BC, so it’s got a lot of history.

This archaelogical site is one of the most impressive destinations in Asia, so it’s a must for any Sri Lanka itinerary (if you have the time). Here, you’ll find huge brick stupas, intricate sculptures, water gardens, and ancient temples, so there’s a lot to see.

Like with Kandy, you’ll want to spend a full day here if you can. Anuradhapura has so much to offer, and it’s not a place that you want to rush.

Polonnaruwa

Polonnaruwa, Sri Lanka itinerary

The ancient city of Polonnaruwa is another great place to include on your Sri Lanka travel itinerary. It was the country’s second capital after Anuradhapura was destroyed in 993.

Polonnaruwa was built by King Parakramabahu I, and the ruins of his royal palace can still be seen here to this day. This complex is also full of shrines, temples, and sculptures, so you’ll want to take your time walking around.

While you explore this ancient city, make sure you take a look at the lion and elephant sculptures which are intricately carved, the large stupa, and Shiva Devale No.2, which is the site’s oldest Hindu temple.

Arugam Bay

Arugam Bay, viewpoint

If you’re looking to spend more time along Sri Lanka’s beautiful coastline then check out Arugam Bay. This is the perfect destination for a relaxing getaway with its white sands, laid-back vibe, and a single main road, which is where you’ll find all the town’s amenities.

Arugam Bay is a popular surfing location and that’s one of the top things to do while staying in this area. You’ll also want to hike up Elephant Rock, visit Muhudu Maha Viharaya, and grab a bite to eat in some of Sri Lanka’s trendiest cafes.

Thanks to its location, there are plenty of day trip opportunities from Arugam Bay!

How to get to Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka itinerary, tropical beach

As Sri Lanka is an island country, the only way to get there is by air. There are 22 airports in Sri Lanka, although only five of them are used for international travel.

Bandaranaike International Airport is where you’ll most likely fly into, and it’s located just outside of Negombo. From the airport, it’s a 35-minute journey by car to Colombo which is the country’s capital.

There are three terminals at Bandaranaike International Airport, and there are currently plans to expand the airport. This includes building another runway, although there’s no set date on when this will occur.

You’ll find non-stop flights from a variety of destinations in Asia, Australia, and Europe, although the flight time will of course differ. There are no direct routes from North America, so you’ll need to make at least one stop on your way to Sri Lanka.

How to get around Sri Lanka

Nine Arches Bridge train

Sri Lanka is a very easy country to travel around as it has a great public transport network. There are plenty of bus and train services, and these run all across the country.

Catching the bus is often the most popular way to get around, as tickets are cheap, and you can get around fairly quickly. Services also run pretty regularly so you’ll have no problems catching one!

However, bus journeys can be uncomfortable, especially as they don’t have any air conditioning. Sometimes, the drivers can be pretty erratic too, and the music can be loud! However, that’s all part of the adventure in our opinion!

Sri Lanka’s train network is also pretty impressive with three main lines; the coast line, the hill country line, and the northern line. On these lines, you can visit plenty of popular destinations, although, for some routes, you’ll need to reserve your ticket in advance to secure a seat.

Other ways to get around Sri Lanka include:

  • Catching a flight – There are 22 airports in Sri Lanka, so you can fly between destinations if you wish. However, this is one of the more expensive ways to get around.
  • Renting a car/scooter – If you’re feeling confident, then you can always hire a car or scooter to get around. This will give you complete flexibility when it comes to creating your Sri Lanka itinerary.
  • Hiring a tuk-tuk – For a more unique way to get around, you could always hire a tuk-tuk. This will allow you to fully appreciate the local culture and it’s an adventure for sure!
  • Hire a car & driver – For those who don’t want to drive around, you can always hire a car & driver or a tuk-tuk driver. This way, you’ll be taken to all the sites you want.
  • Taking a taxi – Another option is to hire a taxi, but this is more suitable for short journeys. Pickme is a popular ride-hailing app, and it’s often more affordable than standard taxis. There’s also Uber.

We typically use 12GO Asia to get around, as it’s very easy to use and you can find some fantastic deals on this platform.

Your other option is to book your tickets through accommodation or tour agencies. Many of the buses also allow you to book tickets at the station itself, or even on the bus. However, we’d recommend booking the larger journeys in advance.

When is the best time to visit Sri Lanka?

Elephant at Udawalawe National Park

December-April is Sri Lanka’s peak season and is when you’ll encounter the best weather. Temperatures are high, meaning you’ll have plenty of opportunities to relax on the beach.

Coincidentally, December-April is also the best time of year for wildlife watching. This is the dry season, so wildlife will start to gather around the watering holes within the country’s national parks. Not only that, but this is the best time of year when it comes to spotting blue whales!

We visited during the month of March and had the most fabulous experience. From the beaches along the South Coast to Sri Lanka’s hill country, we never had any serious problems with the weather.

Before your visit, just make sure you do your research when it comes to the country’s dual monsoons. Typically, the Southwest monsoon occurs between May-July, while the Northeast monsoon occurs between October-January.
